Watcher in the Shadows (The)
by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Age Range: 12+
Fourteen-year-old Irene and her brother Dorian move from Paris to Blue Bay, a small village on the Normandy coast where their recently widowed mother, Simone has taken a job as housekeeper to the reclusive and mysterious inventor and toymaker, Lazarus Jann.
Jann lives in an old mansion called Cravensmoore; he is surrounded by a vast array of scary automaton toys that appear incredibly life-like. Jann stipulates that his toy factory, as well as a hidden wing of the house, where his sickly wife Alexandra is housed, is strictly out of bounds to Simone and her family.
Irene and Ismael, a boy from the village and brother of Hannah who works up at the house, become inevitably bound together by the strange and chilling events that occur during the summer of 1937 in Blue Bay when a dark, malevolent force is unleashed enveloping them all.
The Watchers in the Shadows is a thriller full of atmospheric mystery, intrigue and romance. A suspicious death, ghostly apparitions and suspense at every turn will leave the reader wondering what is fantasy and what is reality.
Carlos Ruiz Zafon wrote four novels for young adults before he became a best-selling author for adults. The Watcher in the Shadows, was written in 1995 and it is possible to see the clear similarities of the Gothic style and masterful storytelling that appeared in his best-seller Shadows in the Wind.
