‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

My Friend
by Beatrice Alemagna
Age Range: Under_5
A very unusual creature that has fur like a dog and is shaped like a sheep doesn’t know what he is. As he goes on his way, he encounters a multitude of people and animals, each one interpreting his identity differently – he isn’t a pigeon, a lion, crocodile or even a hippopotamus – but no one getting it right. When he meets an equally unusual animal they both accept each other as friends without
questioning their being or where they came from.
It would be nice to see more of this type of picture book published in the UK with its highly innovative, clever and original story and illustrations by Beatrice Alemagna. It also conveys an important international message of accepting people beyond their colour, nationality or appearance and of reassuring any child that feels different. The illustrations are stunning: collage type artwork, using a variety of textiles, buttons and threads in double spread pages that perfectly depict different feelings and emotions.
