My Baby Sister Is a Diplodocus
by Aurore Petit
Age Range: Under_5
A young boy meets his new baby sister at the hospital for the first time. Once back at home, he dangles his favourite cuddly pink elephant in front of her; serenades her by playing on his guitar and shows her his bedroom. Things have changed at home and the boy is not sure how to react especially when the word ‘no’ becomes a common refrain from his parents. Whether it’s offering his Choco-puffs, crashing his front bike wheel into the pram or using his toys to play with his sister, it’s always a resounding “No!”. Asked if he likes being a big brother he angrily replies “No”! and retreats to his room. After dressing up in his tyrannosaurus costume he tearfully wrecks his bedroom, but soon his imagination takes over when his Dad reassures him and the boy finds a way to deal with his conflicting feelings about his new sibling.
French author Aurore Petit has tackled the age-old problem of an older sibling coming to terms with a new addition to the family. Written in a humorous way, translated by Daniel Hahn, and with outline pen and ink drawings filled with vivid colour, this is a charming and funny book.
