Side by Side is a poetry anthology inspired by poets and artists from around the world. An innovative collection of new poems, most published for the first time in England, that connects a work of art with a poet’s words.
The anthology comprises of forty poems with an English translation accompanying each poem in its original language. After an introduction by Jan Greenberg, the book is divided into four sections – Stories, Voices, Expressions and Impressions. At the back of the book there are biographies of the poets, translators and artists, Poetry and illustrated credits, a Map of the World and an index.
There is a diverse selection of artwork from all corners of the globe ranging from the Picasso’s ‘Dish of Pears’ with an accompanying poem, ‘The Pears’ by Maria Teresa Andruetto translated from Spanish; ‘Forest’ by Wafaa S. Jdeed – silk colours on silk with a poem by the artist translated from Arabic; ‘The Girl with the Pitcher’, Bronze by Paul Sokolav with an accompanying poem ‘A Statue At Tsarskoye Selo’ by Alexander Pushin, translated from Russian and ‘Cape Cod Evening’ by Edward Hopper and a poem of the same name by Ernest Farrés translated from Catalan.
This collection will introduce young readers to a kaleidoscope of beautiful pictures and poetic voices and is an ideal way to explore beautiful works of art together with inspirational poetry. This is a book not to be missed as it truly is a visual and textual feast.
