A Pack of Your Own
by Maria Nilsson Thore
Age Range: 6-8
The lonely dachshund narrator dreams of having a friend, but every time the little sausage dog goes to the park it’s hard to fit in with the other dogs. All they seem interested in doing is running around in circles, barking and sniffing each other’s bottoms! The narrator has more refined tastes and enjoys taking a bath, sipping coffee and doing a crossword and has prized vintage sticks and an array of bones. The dachshund does all the wrong things compared to the other dogs from standing on two legs and stroking a cat which is a definite no, no. As for peeing up the side of a tree, that doesn’t bear thinking about! So, when the little dachshund meets a ditsy poodle, life is suddenly much more fun.
A Pack of Your Own by award-winning Swedish author and illustrator Maria Nilsson Thore, translated by A. A. Prime, is a clever and hilarious story about friendship in a dog’s world. It’s the exquisite pencil and crayon illustrations that really make this book. With the grey hues and just a dash of colour, the dachshund’s antics are shown in glorious detail whether it’s taking a bath, sitting on the loo doing the crossword or the funny images of the two friends having fun together. The artwork beautifully enhances the story as the dachshund struggles to change in order to fit in and be accepted by the other dogs. Only when the narrator meets the poodle does the realisation dawn that it’s okay to be different and still be friends.
“I never thought I could have so much fun with one of the others.” “The best thing in the world is other dogs. Especially if they are not exactly like me!”
