This is an exquisite book for children who truly adore Dinosaurs. To inspire the reader to embark on a unique journey there is a message from the past – “When you opened this book you stepped into our world – the mysterious world of dinosaurs. We are creatures of Cretaceous, before history began.”

There are ten adventures with visual puzzles to solve and surprises hidden under flaps including: Exploring the Forest of Illusion; Crossing the Dinosaur Mountains; Flying through the Pterosaur Canyon; Mixing and Matching Dinosaurs; Spotting the Difference and finding Baby Raptor. All the adventures are linked to each other leading on to the next challenge.

Chinese illustrator and author Yanan Dong graduated from the Picture Book Creation Studio at China Central Academy of Fine Art. This fun and clever book with its clear and concise text, translated by award-winning translator Helen Wang, and Dong’s diverse artwork, rendered in pencil and digitally coloured will capture the imagination of any child (and adult).

Dong depicts dozens of realistic dinosaurs on the one hand, while venturing into surrealism on the other – in one double-page spread there are 18 different ‘eggs’, the contents of which is revealed by lifting the flaps to show monsters, dinosaur-themed clouds, carvings, and pastries. Another double-page full of more ‘eggs’ displays an amusing stylistic tribute to modern artists: Andy Warhol, Piet Mondrian, Yayoi Kusama, Salvador Damien Hirst, René Magritte, Gustav Klimt and Jackson Pollock. At the end of the book there is an attached booklet offering answers to the puzzles with subtle visual keys to each challenge.

Express Delivery from the Dinosaur World is a beautifully designed book, with meticulous attention to detail in both the illustrations and the fold-outs, lift-the-flaps and acetate sheets; all of which combine to make this a masterful book.
