La Tortuga Marian
by Almudena Taboada
Age Range: 6-8
La Tortuga Marian was included in the ‘Reading the Way’: Inclusive Books from Around the World Research project. The book is not available in English but is referred to as Marian the Tortoise throughout the RtW Research. (Full report in the Education Zone of this website)
Marian the tortoise gets up early, washes her face and gets dressed very slowly. She is always late for school and doesn’t recognise the numbers on the blackboard. Marian would love to be quicker and also be able to read but she does love to draw. Her classmates help her with her school work and get together to buy her a wonderful birthday present.
Marian the Tortoise by Almudena Taboada and illustrated by Ana López offers a positive depiction of Down Syndrome. Although the story is unremarkable, it is the illustrations that will engage young children. Ana López Escrivá’s colourful, detailed illustrations manage to capture expressions that convey Down Syndrome without being overt. A child reading the book would not immediately identify that this book relates to a particular form of disability unless they read the notes at the back of the book so the book comments on inclusion in a non-specific but positive way.
Almudena Taboada has written a series 'Tales to Feel' featuring different disabilities which include Lola la Loba and Sofía la Golondrina both included in the ‘Reading the Way’ research.
