Sport: Step-by-Step
by Bénédicte Mathieu and Myrtille Rambion
Age Range: 9-11
This is a fun book for all those who enjoy playing or watching sport and is perfect for 2012. Sport is followed through the centuries showing how varied, imaginative and sometimes downright dangerous it was.
French author Benedict Mathieu has created a perfect all-round information book. Set out in easy-to-read chapters, each is devoted to a different topic; it contains short snappy paragraphs which are broken up by the colourful comical illustrations by Myrtle Rambo and amusing, but informative captions underneath. Sport covers anything from the fastest speed a shuttlecock has been hit to the ways in which athletes try to avoid being drug-tested at major international competitions. There is also information on the history of most sports including rugby, football and tennis, how the Olympics started as well as the health benefits of sport, politics, and sports around the world so there is something of interest for everyone.
There are lots of unusual facts to be found in this quirky book too, such as how tennis used to be played by hitting the ball with the hand in 14th century France, that table tennis used to be called wiff-waff or that only single women could attend the Olympics. At the back of the book there is a sports vocabulary along with a quiz and a list of useful websites.
Sport is the fifth book in the French Step-by-Step series – that teaches children about the world, one step at a time – translated and published in English by Gecko Press. The layout and comic-strip style illustrations will delight all those sport fans and even those who have no interest in this subject will enjoy reading this book.
These guides are extremely easy to use and will help adults explain things simply and succinctly. The questions within the text are ideal for sparking off discussion or activity and their versatility make them an excellent resource that will be a great addition to any classroom.
