‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our

diminished, we are starved’

My Very Own Lighthouse
by Francisco Cunha
Age Range: 6-8
A young girl lives in a small fishing village where her father is a fisherman. At
bedtime she has horrible nightmares about her dad navigating the dangerous
waters during the stormy nights. She goes to her mum for comfort and is
reassured that her dad is safe, because wherever he is, a lighthouse will always
look after him. Then she has a wonderful idea – she’ll build her very own
‘lighthouse of love’ with the help of her toys – to help guide her dad on his final
return home. This is a touching picture book of hope, which highlights the fears
of a young child, drawing on the experience of a small district in Portugal, where
the men leave their families behind to work at sea.
A debut picture book for Francisco Cunha, it has a universal value and poetic message about the absence of the paternal figure. The dramatic pictures are in perfect harmony
with the spirit of the text.
