Only Pupil in the School (The)
by Liu Hsukung
Age Range: Under_5
When the school term starts only one pupil shows up and the teachers begin to worry that they won't have a job if there is no one to teach. They all start competing and fighting over who will teach the solo student. As the teachers fight for the girl's attention they get louder and louder and don't see her creeping out of the classroom. Now her education is only just beginning!
She visits the forest and learns about flowers and insects; she learns how to make soup from a chef; has lots of fun and exercise with a dog she meets in the park. Everywhere she goes she learns something new. Finding her way to the library she starts to create her own book of her experiences.
This is a delightful picture book from Taiwanese author and illustrator Liu Hsukung. Its unusual take on school life and learning beyond the classroom is refreshing. The soft and expressive illustrations have a child-like quality as they chart the little girl's adventures showing that learning can be fun.
