Princess and the Pea (The)
by Hans Christian Andersen
Age Range: 6-8
This version of the well-known classic tale by Hans Christian Andersen is simply retold and delicately illustrated by French illustrator, Dorothée Duntze. When a prince sets out to find a princess to marry, he wants her to be the `real thing’. He travels the length and breadth of the world in search of a wife and meets plenty of princesses but none are suitable. One stormy night a princess turns up at the castle and the Queen decides to find out whether she is a real princess or not!
Duntze has produced intricate and dreamy illustrations of haunting faces and unusual scenic perspectives. The multi-panel scenes of the Prince as he encounters a line of prospective brides is particularly appealing. The use of pale, warm shades in pastel colours have a distinctive art nouveau style. This large-format book will appeal to children and they will enjoy the humour in this tale.
