Sorcerer's Apprentice (The)
by Gerda Muller
Age Range: 6-8
Orphan boy Oliver works as a goatherd for a bad-tempered farmer but one day he decides to run away. After walking many miles hungry and exhausted he ends up outside the home of Alfred the sorcerer. Taking pity on Oliver the sorcerer agrees to make him his apprentice. Life is very busy with lots of chores but Alfred is pleased with Oliver’s progress and he teaches him three magic words that are not to be used when Alfred is not there. When the sorcerer goes on a journey Oliver is left in charge. Bored with the endless tasks he decides to try out the spells which end up getting out of hand, now how can Oliver stop the magic?
This classic and much-loved story based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's original poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, written in 1791 and inspired by a story told to him by his maid, is re-imagined by Dutch author and illustrator Gerda Muller with warm and lively illustrations full of charm and detail.
