Scaler of the Peaks (The)
by Karin Erlandsson
Age Range: 9-11
The Scaler of the Peaks is the third book in the four-part series Song of the Eye Stone. In the Queendom, Pearls are the most precious commodity and narrator Miranda, a skilled pearl fisher, Syrsa, a pearl whisperer and Lydia, the medicine woman, set out to find the Eye Stone – the pearl that offers everything to whoever possesses it. Now in the possession of the evil Iberis, it is the source of all her power and they know it must be destroyed.
Together they must face a long and arduous journey, scaling inhospitable mountain peaks, while battling extreme cold and hunger. They need to deal with the strange ways of the mountain people while avoiding arousing their suspicion as well as adapting to confined spaces as they go deep into the mountain caves where the Eye Stone is being kept.
Finnish Swedish-speaking author and journalist Karin Erlandsson is one of the most successful and most acclaimed children’s authors in the Swedish language and she has woven a fantastical tale, skilfully translated by Annie Prime. Erlandsson effortlessly combines a fantastical world with the natural world from the meticulous detail of the trio’s arduous climb up the mountains and navigating the caves to Lydia and Syrsa’s knowledge of herbs and plants for healing.
Although this can be read as a stand-alone story as Erlandsson does recap crucial elements from the past two books, it would be ideal to read them all in sequence to enjoy the epic nature of the saga.
