Bug Next Door (The)
by Beatrice Alemagna
Age Range: Under_5
Little Speckled Bug is in bed with a cold. He hasn’t been able to go to advanced hopping classes with the others so he is alone at home feeling very miserable. Suddenly there is a knock at the door. When Little Speckled Bug answers he finds a mysterious creature: a bug just like him, but completely different and not like anything he has ever seen before. It turns out that she has just moved in next door and is keen to get to know her new neighbour.
This is another quirky book about the adventures of the little bugs by Beatrice Alemagna following on from Bugs in a Blanket and Bugs in the Garden.
The simple narrative with its message about differences and similarities – ‘in the blanket, just as in the rest of the world, there are lots of differences between girls and boys. And sometimes these differences are exactly the things we like’ – is delivered in a comical way that will appeal to young children.
The charming style of texture, appliqué and collage that has created the world of bugs makes them come alive through thread, buttons, different coloured fabrics and felted wool that helps to evoke the hairiness and dustiness reminiscent of old wool blankets.
