Life According to Dani
by Rose Lagercrantz
Age Range: 6-8
Dani is spending the summer holidays on an island with her best friend Ella. Her Dad is still in hospital after a car accident but calls her every day. Dani is happy. The friends play all day long exploring, building huts, fishing and lots of swimming. Dani likes to be happy even when life makes it hard for her to do so. When Dani gets an unexpected visit from her Dad with a nurse in tow, who turns out to be her Dad's new girlfriend, Dani isn't sure her life is happy any more.
Life According to Dani is the latest new title in the acclaimed series by popular award-winning Swedish author Rose Lagercrantz. Dani wants to be happy and she tries very hard although sometimes it's just too difficult. Lagercrantz's text deals sensitively with the introduction of the Dad's new girlfriend Sadie and the range of emotions that Dani feels. The simple pen and ink illustrations by Eva Eriksson, one of the best-loved illustrators in Sweden, bring a gentle humour as well as pathos.
This a heart-warming story that explores how Dani navigates her emotions from being happy with her best friend Ella as they spend care-free days playing together to her unhappiness when Sadie appears. It presents a new challenge for Dani and she needs to regain her wonderful optimism and find a reason to be happy again.
Life According to Dani can be read as a stand-alone chapter book, although it's well worth reading the whole series. Other titles include: My Happy Life (2012), My Heart is Laughing (2014) and When I am Happiest (2015) (all reviewed on the Outside In World website).
