Fossils From Lost Worlds
by Helene Rajcak and Damien Laverdunt
Age Range: 9-11
This attractively designed and illustrated book tells you everything you want to know about fossils and much, much more. From the first fossil researchers who discovered the earliest animal life on Earth to the age of mammals and birds, there is a lot of information to digest here.
In a clear and concise format French author/illustrators Héléne Rajcak and Damien Laverdunt, translated by Daniel Hahn, provide a fascinating insight into palaeontology told through a mixture of comic-style layouts, colourful illustrations and data. Whether it’s the story of a spiny sea worm without a tail or head, a walking fish or the Microraptor – a four-winged dinosaur, this book is packed with incredible detail.
The superb meticulous artwork combined with the bite-sized pieces of text makes it easily accessible to readers. There is so much to absorb and the authors have cleverly managed the information so that you can dip in and out of the book or focus on one specific section.
There is a preface by Cecile Fromont-Colin, Head of the Palaeontology and Comparative Anatomy Gallery, National Museum of Natural History, Paris and a brief history of palaeontology – in the final chapter which helps to explain how science is a process of thinking and rethinking, questioning and learning.
Fossils from Lost Worlds is ideal for engendering an interest in geology and palaeontology and for use in any classroom.
