‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Birte Muller
Age Range: Under_5
This is a light-hearted story of a frog whose indigestion problems are causing excess gas. He farts when he’s eating, when he’s swimming, and even in class. With this unsociable tendency starting to get him into trouble, Farley decides he must try to control himself and refrain from farting. However, this results in even further difficulty, as his stomach swells up like a balloon and Farley takes off into the air. As he floats off into the sky, the only solution of course is to release some gas…
Toilet humour is always a popular subject with young children. In this case, the comedy levels will be heightened still further by the addition of a suitable sound effect, courtesy of an interactive button to press. Birte Muller’s illustrations are colourful and entertaining, and the lively text encourages plenty of audience participation, prompting the button to be pressed at every stage of the story (although it is hard to imagine that most children will require much prompting).
This is a tongue-in-cheek board book that is refreshingly open about bodily functions.
