A Swallow in Winter
by Timothee de Fombelle
Age Range: 6-8
On a quiet Christmas eve, Gloria the swallow defies the pull of the equator where she should have stayed throughout the winter feeling compelled instead to take a long flight from Africa in search of something she cannot quite name. Lonely Freddy d’Angelo hasn’t spoken to anyone for one hundred days and is also travelling in the same direction, setting off from the city of Genoa in his yellow Gelato Pepino & Schultz freezer van towards his destination of London. When Freddy’s delivery is cancelled, he must turn around to go back home. As heavy snow begins to fall a tired Gloria knows she must find somewhere safe to stay. Freddy’s and Gloria’s journeys bring them together with another who is also looking for shelter, kindness and hope.
Award-winning French author Timothée de Fombelle has written a beautiful atmospheric modern classic story, translated by Sarah Ardizzone. Although it is set at Christmas this story is timeless and brims with humanity as it tackles modern-day issues such as loneliness, seeking to belong and compassion and kindness. The hauntingly snowy landscapes together with the dramatic photographic style watercolour artwork by Thomas Campi help to bring this lovely tale to life.
