‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Abel and the Wolf
by Sergio Lairla
Age Range: 6-8
Now that Abel is old enough he needs to make his own way in the world.
Together with the parting gifts from his parents – a walking stick, a knife, a large
pot, some herbs and seeds, and a book with golden letters – Abel sets out on
his journey. After travelling for many days, he finds a clearing in the forest and
settles down to build himself a house and plant a garden. However, he is not
alone, for the forest belongs to a wolf. Wolf is very suspicious and becomes angry
and jealous as he watches Abel’s every move. He deviously plots to attack Abel
and steal everything he owns but his attempts fail miserably. In time, mistrust
turns into friendship as Abel uses the gifts from his parents to find ways to turn
a fearsome foe into a faithful friend. A wonderful, poetic story by Sergio Lairla,
accompanied by bold, strong illustrations by Alessandra Roberti.
