‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Abby
by Wolfram Hanel
Age Range: 6-8
This story is set on a very small island off the Irish coast, inhabited by just a few
people. Abby is a dog owned by Moira, a young girl who is not very good at
maths, especially as she spends most of the time daydreaming about her dog
who is her best friend. Moira and Abbey enjoy life together running and playing
freely in the meadows and on the beaches. However, their happiness is soon
interrupted when Abby accidentally eats some poisonous meat. The prognosis
for Abbey looks grim but Moira refuses to give up hope and spends long hours
nursing Abby and coaxing her back to life.
Wolfram Hänel based Abby on a true story from a small village in Kilnarovanagh in southern Ireland. Rosemary Lanning’s translation from the original German reads with fluency and at the right pace. This is a moving story for children who are just beginning to develop their reading skills and is part of the ‘Easy Read’ series.
