Toys and Tales with Everyday Materials
by Sudarshan Khanna, Gita Wolf and Anushka Ravishankar
Age Range: 9-11
This activity book shows how to make a range of toys with everyday materials based on traditional folk toys from different parts of India. Tara Publishing and the National Institute of Design produced this book after a workshop on folk toymaking with children of different ages. All the toys covered in the book were made by the children.
There are five chapters covering toys that make a noise, toys that dance, pop-up toys that play tricks, toys that move with the wind and toys that need skill. This is a book designed to be used by different age groups. For children between the ages of 8-12 there are step-by-step instructions on how to make each toy. For the 13-16 age group science is brought alive by examining the physical laws behind the working of these toys and for adults it places the tradition of toymaking in a contemporary context. Another excellent art activity book from Tara Publishing.
The other art activity books in the series are: Child Art with Everyday Materials , Masks and Performance with Everyday Materials and Puppets Unlimited with Everyday Materials.
