Swing Under the Maple Tree (The)
by Oksana Bula
Age Range: Under_5
In the local park under the Maple tree, Nina is playing on a swing while Marko’s grandpa is planting Delphiniums. “Delphiniums make me think of dolphins” says Nina. As Nina swings harder disaster strikes when she jumps off the swing and tramples the newly planted flowers. This makes Nina very sad but fortunately, her dad has a plan!
Swing Under the Maple Tree is a lovely, gentle story by Ukrainian writer Halyna Tkachuk, translated by Oksana Lushcherska and Michael M. Naydan, about learning to put things right and nurturing new life as Nina’s parents help her to replace what she has inadvertently destroyed.
Accompanied by bold and colourful illustrations from Ukrainian artist
Oksana Bula.
As well as being an author, Tkachuk is also a researcher in children’s literature and a teacher. Bula is also a designer, book illustrator and creator of homemade craft brands and glass jewellery.
Swing Under the Maple Tree is one of a series of bilingual books from the new publisher Pineapple Lane. Each title is written, translated and illustrated by authors and artists whose lives have been disrupted by conflict. All the books are free to refugee families and the communities they are living with and are distributed through schools, libraries and grassroots organisations.
