A Bird in Winter
by Hélène Kérillis
Age Range: 6-8
Eight-year-old Mayken works in her mother’s guesthouse. Life is hard and her only free day is Sunday. Mayken loves winter time particularly when there is ice on the pond and she can feel the wind on her face as she skates across the ice.
When the village bells chime four o’clock Mayken knows that she must return home as she is already late. Taking the shortest route home across the hill she discovers an injured bird and decides to take it to a safe hideout where she can nurse it back to health.
Written by the French author Hélène Kérillis, ‘The Hunter in Snow’ by Pieter Bruegel provides the backdrop to this heart-warming story. The watercolour illustrations by Stéphane Girel are charming and vibrant. At the back of the book there is a stunning reproduction of Bruegel’s masterpiece together with information about his life and work.
Another beautiful art book from Prestel in their ‘Pictures That Tell Stories’: Art for Children series.
