Little Polar Bear and the Submarine
by Hans de Beer
Age Range: 6-8
It is an unusually warm spring; the snow is melting faster than usual, the ice is breaking up and scientists have come to the North Pole to study the change. Lars is a very curious little polar bear and discovering some fresh footprints in the snow leading down the hillside to the bay he can’t resist following them. Floating on the water is a big black monster that is making a loud booming noise with smoke billowing out of its belly.
As Lars gets nearer to this strange object he encounters a little dachshund called Freddy who tells him that two cubs that were found stranded on an ice floe are inside the machine. Brave little Lars promises to take them back to their parents – but can he do it?
This is another lovely adventure featuring Lars the little polar bear by Dutch author and illustrator Hans de Beer. Published in 27 countries and on a US TV programme Lars is a well-known character around the world.
This story has the usual delightful pen and ink and watercolour illustrations but it also touches on an important message of global warming for younger readers explaining what happens when the ice starts to melt.
