Colorful Mondays: A Bookmobile Spreads Hope in Honduras
by Nelson Rodriguez & Leonardo Augstin Montes
Age Range: 6-8
Luis loves Mondays because it’s the day the bookmobile comes to his neighbourhood in Villa Nueva, Honduras. There are sad stories everywhere – “Luis finds them, like large dark clouds, when he goes to get water from the well or when he sells the tortillas his mother makes.” Luis doesn’t want anyone to find a reason to be sad so when the bookmobile visits bringing stories that burst with life, laughter and colour, he wants to share them with his family and friends – “When Luis hears a happy story, he feels the same emotion he feels when he sees a rainbow.” Monday becomes an important day for Luis and his friends as they eagerly await the Bookmobile. Sometimes, a book is read aloud, there is a theatre show or they sing a song and it’s difficult for the children to say what they like best because everything is magical.
Written by Nelson Rodríguez, a character in the story, and Leonardo Augustín Montes, and translated by Lawrence Schimel, it is based on a real bookmobile programme in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Whilst the story doesn’t highlight how hard life is for the community, the simplicity of its message of the joy that books and reading can bring is what carries the book.
Vibrant artwork by Venezuelan professor and illustrator Rosana Faría (illustrator of El libro negro de los colores/ The Black Book of Colours listed on the website) and Brazilian illustrator Carla Tabora who are both based in Barcelona, sparkles with impressionistic swirls of colour enhancing the powerful message of hope.
Nelson Rodríguez is a writer, music teacher, singer, musician and cultural promoter with Asociación Compartir (“The Sharing Association”) which offers opportunities to over 3,500 boys and girls from Tegucigalpa through community centres, libraries, and art workshops. Rodríguez directs the mobile library project, the bookmobile, and accompanied by a volunteer, carries out activities that promote reading and art. The project is supported by JustWorld International, a non-profit organisation that transforms lives in underprivileged communities around the world.
