Adventure of Life (The): Step-by-Step
by Jean-Benoît Durand
Age Range: 9-11
How old is our planet? What did the first living creatures look like? Why did the dinosaurs die out? How fast do humans grow compared to mice? These questions and many more are just some of the topics that are dealt with in The Adventures of Life.
French author Jean-Benoit Durand has created a perfect all-round information book. Set out in easy-to-read chapters, each is devoted to a different topic; it contains short snappy paragraphs which are broken up by the colourful comical illustrations by Robin Gindre and amusing, but informative captions underneath. The Adventures of Life is divided up into three main sections – ‘A Planet for Life’. ‘From Early Mammals to the Human Race’, and Life is a Great Adventure’. Each section covers from how the universe was born, first living creatures to fossils, how mammals multiply and why creatures are different from each other, the food chain, threats to life and giving life.
Towards the end of the book there is even a calendar for the history of Earth condensed into one year – ‘If Earth was one year old’ – followed by is a mini dictionary along with a ‘Life’ quiz and a list of useful websites.
The Adventures of Life is the fourth book in the French Step-by-Step series – that teaches children about the world, one step at a time – translated and published in English by Gecko Press. The layout and comic-strip style illustrations will delight readers of any age.
These guides are extremely easy to use and will help adults explain things simply and succinctly.
