Bear Is Never Alone
by Marc Veerkamp
Age Range: Under_5
Bear is an accomplished piano player and he regales his forest friends with beautiful music. “More, more, Piano Bear!” the animals cry each time he tries to stop playing. When Bear refuses to go on they continue to pressurise and heckle him “Does Mr Piano Bear think he’s too good for us now?” Finally, Bear reaches breaking point, after all, everyone needs their own space sometimes!
Dutch author Marc Veerkamp’s charming story, translated by Laura Watkinson, demonstrates that we all need to have those peaceful and quiet times. It’s the atmospheric mixed-media illustrations by Jeska Verstegen, though, that really make this book. With a mainly black and white palette, differing shades of grey and the occasional bursts of red they capture Bear’s different moods in his quest for solitude. There are also lovely touches such as the Zebra, who wants to share a story with Bear and whose stripes are shown as typewritten text.
Bear is Never Alone is a lovely story with the message of Bear’s plight being one that some children (and adults) will identify with.
