H Mairn Pineza
by Soula Mitakidou and Evangelia Tressou
Age Range: 6-8
H Mairn Pineza was included in the ‘Reading the Way’: Inclusive Books from Around the World Research (2015). The book is not available in English but is referred to as Tina Thumb Tack throughout the RtW Research. (Full report in the Education Zone of this website)
This is the story of Tina, a drawing pin (or 'thumb tack') whose role was to hold up a tiny notebook on the kitchen wall where the family could note down the things they had to remember. Tina was happy with her life because high on the wall where she lived she could see everything that went on around her.
Tina Thumb Tack is an unusual and engaging story. OIW found that this large-format book with its bright illustrations and references to travel appealed to the young readers with whom we shared it. Key observations were that large format books were good for group work, particularly good for children who will never read and are also ideal for students with additional needs.
