Garden Jungle
by Helene Druvert
Age Range: 6-8
When Tom’s feeling bored, he runs off to play.
A magical butterfly shows him the way
To a world of adventures not far from his door.
The garden’s a jungle – so much to explore!
Here’s another stunning, intricate masterpiece from French author and designer Hélène Druvert.
Tom is bored and his mother tells him to take a look outside because he is sure to find lots of things he’s not seen before. As Tom becomes more observant of his surroundings, the garden transforms into a dazzling jungle.
The opening scenes in Garden Jungle show Durvert’s trademark black and white silhouettes and, like those used in her earlier titles New York Melody (2018) and Paris Up, Up and Away (2015), it will take your breath away. Here, Tom’s black silhouette is set against a pale blue background as a bright coral butterfly leads him into a series of intricate, laser-cut pages of enchanting illustrations. While Tom’s black silhouette remains constant it is contrasted with different coloured backgrounds which progress from shades of blue to shades of green as he wanders through the garden jungle. The cut-outs show leaves hanging down from trees, a fallen tree trunk across the water, exotic animals and much more on each carefully structured page.
While the amusing rhyming text takes the reader through the garden jungle with Tom it’s the artwork that steals the show.
