One summer 12-year-old Portia goes to stay with her mum’s aunts – Bramble and Rose – in Wales and little does she realise what an extraordinary magical and dangerous adventure she will be undertaking.

When Portia encounters a mysterious fox who appears to be staking out the house and then discovers a key in Aunt Bramble’s desk drawer, which she picks up and puts in her pocket, it is the beginning of a journey she will never forget. While waiting for Ben, (a local who promises to show her around the area), the following day the fox appears again and Portia feels powerless to resist following it into the woods where she discovers a mysterious door set in a bramble hedge. Feeling compelled to try the key in the lock she opens the door and follows the fox through leaving it wide open behind her. Unbeknownst to Portia, it is a portal to other worlds and should never be opened and by doing so she has inadvertently disturbed the slumber of the Grey King and his ghostly army. Now she must travel through the Borderlands and on into Faerie ruled by Titania the Faerie Queen. Dangers are lurking everywhere and she will need the help of her friend Ben, Aunt Rose, their newfound fairy companions and the shapeshifting fox Robin Goodfellow, who is their last chance to open the portal and finally return home.

German author Kathrin Tordasi’s exciting fantasy was inspired after a year’s stay in Bangor, Wales. It’s full of wonderful descriptions of beautiful scenery, mythical creatures and the frightening mist that envelopes those it comes into contact with depriving them of their memory. The weaving storyline with its parallel narratives of Portia and Ben and the tight dialogue, often humorous at times, especially with the petulant and narcissistic Titania has been expertly translated by Cathrin Wirtz.

Bramble Fox was the winner of the Goldener Bücherpirat Prize 2021 and of the Füther Lupe Prize 2021.
