‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Falling
by Anne Provoost
Age Range: 14+
After the death of his grandfather, Lucas and his mother are spending the summer
in his house near a French country town. As the long, oppressive summer
progresses Lucas becomes aware of a dark secret surrounding his grandfather’s
activities during the Second World War. Oblique references are made about the
fate of some local Jewish children and Lucas begins to feel that he is in some way
responsible for his grandfather’s actions. Meanwhile, racial tension is growing in
the neighbourhood against the Arab migrant population. Lucas falls increasingly
under the spell of Benoît, a smooth-talking right-wing extremist who draws him into
violent action against the migrant workers. And then there is enigmatic Caitlin
with her strong opinions, who challenges Lucas’ views. When tragedy strikes
he is forced to make a terrible choice, and risk repeating his grandfather’s
mistakes.
This is a dark and deeply disturbing book that deals with the seductive
power of extreme nationalism, Holocaust denial and racial intolerance as it follows
Lucas’ journey from innocence and ignorance to a gradual understanding of
himself and his family’s past.
