diminished, we are starved’

In the Wild
by Sofia Nordin
Age Range: 9-11
Amanda feels a social outcast and is the target of bullying. When her school
organises a nature trip, Amanda dreads the thought of spending a whole week
with her classmates. The white water rafting course that is supposed to be the
highlight of the trip suddenly turns into a nightmare. Amanda’s boat overturns
in an accident and she is dragged under water by the strong current. Philip, her
tormentor at school also suffers the same fate. Philip and Amanda survive and
find themselves lost in the wild. The tables are now turned on Philip as he
realises that he is dependent upon Amanda for her knowledge of the natural
habitat that enables them to find wild edible plants to eat in order to survive.
Slowly a different relationship begins to emerge as together they confront their
fears.
This is a thought-provoking and exciting adventure story of survival that also explores the theme of bullying and the physical and mental ability to survive, almost doubling up as a survival guide for children.
