Inkspell
by Cornelia Funke
Age Range: 12+
Another lengthy fantasy from best-selling author, Cornelia Funke that follows the lives of Meggie, her father, Mo, the bookbinder, Dustfinger and Farid in this sequel to Inkheart.
A year has passed since Meggie and her reunited parents Mo and Resa have returned home from the pages of Inkheart. Dustfinger, the fire-eater is desperate to return to his own world and when he meets a crooked storyteller with magical powers that allows him to return to the Inkworld, he leaves behind his distraught young apprentice, Farid. This sets in motion a set of circumstances that lead Farid to go in search of Meggie to ask her to help him find Dustfinger. Meggie cannot resist the temptation as she has inherited her father’s incredible ability to read characters in and out of books. She knows that the book’s author, Fenoglio is now a character in his own pages and she is sure that she will be able to enlist his help when she is ready to return again to the real world. They embark on an adventure that is fraught with danger as they plunge back into the murky depths of the Inkworld.
Fantasy lovers will not be disappointed by this sequel. All the same ingredients of suspense, a fast paced story and memorable characters are here. Cornelia Funke does provide a recap of Inkheart but as with most trilogies or sequels it is necessary to have read it first in order to keep the myriad of characters and their nicknames clear. Inkheart has been made into a major film and there is the third and final part of the trilogy to come.
