Inside the Villains
by Clotilde Perrin
Age Range: 6-8
Inside the Villains is an exceptional pop-up book that reveals the secrets of three of the most famous fairy tale villains: wolves, giants, and witches. Readers will be able to lift the flaps to discover the hidden depths of each villain and see what’s lurking there – under their nose, inside their hat, under their clothes or in their pockets and perhaps, even in their stomach where the victim of their last meal is waiting to be rescued. Each villain has their own personality card, which shows their physical characteristics, strengths and weaknesses, their favourite pastimes, food and books. The Wolf, for example, fears children more cunning than him as well as cauldrons of hot water, while the Giant hates vegetables, especially beans, and it will be no surprise to readers that the Witch hates mirrors and wide open ovens. Accompanying each pop-up villain is a complete story featuring them of course: ‘The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats’, ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘Alyoshka and Baba Yaga’.
It’s no surprise that Inside Villains sold 10,000 copies in the first three months on its release in France and Italy. This exquisitely produced book by French author/illustrator Clotilde Perrin, translated by Daniel Hahn, is full of humour and intricate illustrations within the pop-ups and lift-the-flaps. The incredible level of detail will ensure readers are totally captivated.
