Bedtime, Not Playtime!
by Lawrence Schimel
Age Range: Under_5
When it’s time for bed, it can get frustrating if not everyone in your house is just as tired as you. This is the case for the main character in Bedtime, Not Playtime!, as she wants to go through her traditional bedtime routine, but her dog Rex just wants to play. As a part of the Rainbow Family Board Books Series, Lawrence Schimel writes both the English and Spanish translations (out of the translations available in 18 languages) of Bedtime, Not Playtime! in clear, bolded words at the top of each page of this early readers’ board book. In this English version, each spread has two sentences (one on each page), and the sentences rhyme with each other—creating a participatory space for children to try to guess each next rhyming word.
The illustrations by Latvian illustrator Elīna Brasliņa feature the main character (the little girl), her dog Rex, her two dads, and her teddy bear. Each illustration is minimal and clear to follow along with the story. Bedtime, Not Playtime! can act as a bedtime story itself, delightfully reminding the readers that it is time to settle down and go to bed, just like the main character!
Bedtime, Not Playtime! is part of the Reading the World: Picture Books and Translation at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, 2022.
