‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Bird Master (The)
by Karin Erlandsson
Age Range: 12+
After their failed quest for the eye stone, Miranda and Syrsa have settled in a northern port town where they must learn to forget about pearls and adapt to a peaceful life in their new woodcutters’ community. Near where Miranda lived with her parents in the forest the skill of felling trees comes back easily to her as she remembers all her father taught her. Now she goes to the forest and works with the other woodcutters. However, their quiet life is interrupted when the normally shy Dagpies begin to attack the population. Miranda knows it can only be the work of one person, Iberis who is now in possession of the eye stone. Soon the whole town is under the tyranny of Iberis and it is only Miranda and Syrsa who can save them.
This is the second in the four-part series Song of the Eye Stone which sees a fierce battle for freedom in the deep forests of the wintry north by Finnish author Karin Erlandsson, translated by Annie Prime. Like the first title The Pearl Whisperer, Erlandsson has combined a fantastical world with reality detailing life in the forest Woodcutting community and the knowledge of herbs and plants for healing.
