Knock! Knock! Where's My Bear?
by Kaori Takahashi
Age Range: 6-8
Knock! Knock! is a very different activity book. “Where is my bear?” asks a little girl. He’s missing so where can he be? She sets off to find him, knocking on the door of each flat in her apartment block. Along the way she meets some rather eccentric characters and sees some strange sights – one flat is submerged in water with fish swimming around while in another a forest appears to be growing.
Clever paper engineering allows the reader to unfold each apartment as the girl continues the search for her bear. It literally unfolds, step-by-step: from right to left, up and down, then left to right. Each new page opens a new part of the story. The design of the book is a simple concept but beautifully executed by Japanese illustrator Kaori Takahashi. Each door-knocking illustration is rendered in grey hues, but opens up into a world of colour when the little girl enters a neighbour’s flat. This is a books that children are sure to never tire of as there is always something to find to look at in the illustrations. It comes in a lovely hardcover presentation sleeve with a grey brick design.
