Impossible
by Isol
Age Range: 6-8
What would you do if you saw the following advert? “Tired? Worried? Mrs Meridien can solve any problems – family, health, money, love. Scientific method. Natural remedies. Fast results.” Would you call up Mrs Meridien? If so, what would you ask her?
In Impossible, by Argentine author Isol and translated from Spanish by Elisa Amado, Toribio is a terror to his parents. As a two-and-a-half-year-old boy, he won’t do anything his parents tell him to do—not to mention, he does not seem to have any respect for their sleep schedules. So, when they see the ad for Mrs Meridien’s service, they give her a call right away and ask for help.
What makes Impossible a fun read is its magical twist that you would never predict at the beginning of the story, sported by eye-catching illustrations of charcoal, ink, and digital collage. Even on the cover, Isol’s illustration of the little boy Toribio only half on the page as he runs away dragging a blanket full of garbage and leaving a trail of toys, scraps, broken pencils, and ragged books is a testament to the effectiveness of the illustrations throughout the rest of the story.
Toribio’s parents, centred and humanized in Impossible, desperately seek Mrs Meridien to change their son. Before contacting Mrs Meridien yourself to solve your own problems, you might want to first give Impossible a read to know what kind of magic she has up her sleeve.
