Magical Life of Mr Renny (The)
by Leo Timmers
Age Range: Under_5
Mr Renny is a painter. His paintings are so good that they almost appear real. He tries to sell his paintings in the market but while his neighbour Miss Rose has a bustling trade selling fruit and vegetables no one wants to buy his pictures. He wishes he could eat the apple or travel on the cruise liner he has just painted so when a stranger appears and enables Mr Renny to have everything he paints he is delighted. Now he can eat whatever he wants, go anywhere he wants, have a new car and live in a big mansion house. In fact, Mr Renny is now able to paint himself a life of luxury, until that is, Miss Rose comes to ask if she can buy one of his paintings, but he doesn’t have any paintings left! Then Mr Renny has to decide what is really important in life.
Belgian author and illustrator Leo Timmers has created an imaginative retelling of the King Midas story. The strong graphic illustrations have subtle references to the work of Belgian surrealist René Magritte and are full of clever, amusing detail. With a gentle humour this story explores creativity, friendship and greed.
