Hatless
by Lateefah Boti
Age Range: 6-8
Hatless is an unusual tale full of imagination. In a town where everyone is born with hats that cover their heads and hide their faces a little girl decides to buck the trend.
She too was born with a hat covering her entire face and her world is dark, silent and odourless which makes her feel trapped and she wonders what is outside her hat. Slowly she begins to lift her hat a little at a time and discovers a different world – one that is full of colour, vibrancy and beautiful things. Eventually, the little girl takes her hat off and the townspeople are horrified at her audacity. They become fearful and begin to avoid her, “You’re different from us … You must leave town!” they tell her. Nevertheless, the girl is not discouraged and she finds a new way to convince everyone that it is much better to be hatless.
Kuwaiti author Lateefah Boti has created an unusual and inspiring story that can be read on many levels. A young girl has the imagination and power to change the way the adults in the town perceive the world bringing light and joy into their lives. First published in Arabic in Kuwait in 2015, translated by Nancy Roberts, it is accompanied by the expressive artwork of award-winning Syrian artist Doha Al-Khateeb. The illustrations are full of life marking the contrast of a grey drab world under the hats to the sparkling bright ones full of bold colour.
