Moonshine Dragon (The)
by Cornelia Funke
Age Range: 6-8
What on earth is going on in Patrick’s bedroom? One moonlit night a very small dragon appears from out of the pages of his story book followed in hot pursuit by a white knight. Patrick knows that something is definitely amiss when he suddenly finds himself shrunk to story book size too. Patrick and the little dragon are now under attack from the White Knight and somehow he must use all his wits to out-smart this dastardly foe.
Another tale in the ‘Little Gems’ series from master storyteller Cornelia Funke with echoes of her best-selling Inkheart trilogy where characters emerge from the pages of a book. The Moonshine Dragon is funny and has plenty of action which will appeal to all children but especially boys. Funke manages effortlessly to keep all the suspense and drama of a much longer novel, within the pages while Mónica Armiño’s animation-like illustrations in a grey palette complement the text accentuating the humour and sense of adventure.
One of the ‘Little Gems’ series published by Barrington Stoke, this pocket-sized format of 100-pages has dyslexia friendly features and is also ideal for reluctant readers too. The short sentences with special line, character, paragraph spacing and font ensure that there is not too much text on each page. There are lots of chapter breaks, special cream paper which minimizes glare together with lots of illustrations to help with the understanding of the story. The book also includes appealing coloured endpapers and jacket flaps with added extras such as spot the difference puzzles and activities.
Each book in this series has been tested for children and young people by children and young people. They are recommended for 5-8’s and with a reading age of 6+, they are also suitable for children of 7-10 reading below this level and for dyslexic or reluctant readers.
