Run, Pumpkin, Run
by Eva Mejuto
Age Range: 6-8
This magical picture book is an original retelling of a well-known traditional folktale known all over Southern Asia. A similar story, No Dinner! by Jessica Souhami, was published by Frances Lincoln in 2000.
On her way to her granddaughter’s wedding an old lady encounters a menagerie of hungry beasts all desperate to gobble her up. The little, frail old lady deters them from doing so by telling them to wait until she returns from the wedding as she will be much fatter. Relaying her plight to her granddaughter who comes up with an ingenious idea of putting her inside an enormous pumpkins and rolling her down the road, thereby, fooling the hungry waiting animals.
An old time favourite, this story is beautifully retold by Spanish writer Eva Mejuto and it lends itself perfectly to reading aloud and engaging children in the story as there is plenty of repetition. The artwork by Portugese Illustrator, Andre Letria is outstanding, highly expressive and original. The expressions of each of the characters and animals seem to pop out from each page in the most dramatic, convincing and vivid way.
