Epileptic
by David B
Age Range: 14+
This is an autobiographical account told in graphic novel format. It is an original
and poignant account of a young boy trying to come to terms with the changes
to family life after his older brother, Jean-Christophe, is diagnosed as an epileptic.
Through stories and pictures, it describes how his parents and family adjust to
Jean-Christophe’s condition and their struggle to overcome his disability. The
book is also a social account, as perceived through the eyes of a young boy, of
growing up in France in the 1960s.
David B. is one of Europe’s most important and innovative comic-strip artists. This novel is based upon his own experience of learning to cope with his brother’s condition through his fantastic drawings of battle scenes which are a reflection of his inner turmoil; it is an incredible piece of work that can be moving and shocking at times but told with honesty and pathos. This is the first translation of all six volumes and it is a modern classic in its own right, which offers parents as well as children an insight into the experience of living with epilepsy.
