George and Tao
by Claude K. Dubois
Age Range: Under_5
Little dog George isn’t sure about Tao the new kitten when he appears in his home. First of all, he sniffs Tao, then they stare at each other and finally, they wag and wave their tails at each other. Soon George and Tao are playing together and become the best of friends. But one day, George gets over-excited and chases Tao up the living room curtain and then disaster – Tao gets hurt. Now, Tao has disappeared and George has no idea where he is. George spends the whole day and evening looking for Tao everywhere. Will Tao ever come home?
George & Tao by Belgian author and illustrator Claude K. Dubois, translated by Daniel Hahn, is a tiny, delicately illustrated picture book in lovely, soft crayon and watercolour. The expressive artwork perfectly captures the strong emotional bond of friendship between George and Tao as well as George’s desolation and worry at his friend’s sudden disappearance and his relief and excitement when Tao returns.
An appealing, simple story with a strong theme of friendship, told through a dog and kitten making this a perfect gift for a child with a new baby/sibling in their lives or the introduction of a new pet.
