Mama God, Papa God
by Richardo Keens-Douglas
Age Range: 6-8
This tale from the Caribbean shows Mama God and Papa God creating the world. With love and laughter they place trees and flowers, animals and birds, water and fish, wind and rain in their new creation. Then they set the world spinning so that there is day and night adding the stars, moon and sun. Papa God creates the first man and Mama God creates the first woman which is then followed by people of all shapes, colours and sizes. Each new creation fills them with delight and they agree that the world is truly a wonderful place.
Eloquently told by one of Canada’s best loved storytellers Richardo Keens-Douglas, a native of Grenada, this creation story is influenced by the oral tradition of storytelling from the Isle of Spice where he grew up. It is perfectly complemented by the bold, imaginative illustrations of Stefan Czernecki whose pictures of Mama God and Papa God, with their rich, tropical colours, were inspired by the religion and folk art of Haiti.
