‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

From Another World
by Ana Maria Machado
Age Range: 9-11
Together with the family of his friends, Mariano’s parents decide to leave their
jobs and set up their own business by buying an old Brazilian coffee plantation
and turning it into an inn. The property has an annexe and it is here that the children encounter Rosario, the ghost of a young black slave girl who lived in the house many years ago. Soon the children get involved in a journey of discovery that will finally reveal the horrendous circumstances in which Rosario lost her young life. This novel explores modern Brazil as well as telling a parallel story of slavery in the 1800s.
There is a glossary of terms at the end of the book, which enables the reader to become familiar with Brazilian food and words. Ana Maria Machado is an international author who has made a major contribution to children’s literature, although no English translations of her books are published in the UK. In this respect
this book is a welcome addition to any private or library collection.
