Oskar and the Things
by Andrus Kirvirahk
Age Range: 9-11
During the Summer while both his parents are away for work, Oskar is sent to the countryside to live with his grandma. Oskar is not exactly enthusiastic and believes it will be a complete disaster especially when he realises he’s left his mobile phone behind. Lonely and bored Oskar finds a block of wood that stands out while rummaging in his grandma’s shed – “it was rectangular and smooth like a soap box. Or a pencil box. Or a mobile phone.” The least Oskar can do is make himself an imaginary mobile phone so he sets about designing his own!
Little does Oskar know that this is just the beginning of his adventure. As he pretends to call the iron cooling in the kitchen he’s completely taken aback when it replies. After speaking to the tough-talking iron, there’s the poetising rubbish bin, a bloodthirsty wardrobe, a dining chair that is desperate to travel the world, the loved-up sugar bowl and milk jug, a red balloon that gets tangled in the crown of a birch tree and many, many more. In fact, Oskar finds himself in high demand as he helps many of them solve their problems and achieve their dreams.
Oskar and the Things is such an original and quirky chapter book about the power of a child’s imagination. Written by Estonian author, poet, playwright, satirist and screenplay writer Andrus Kivirähk and expertly translated by Adam Cullen, it is full of humour and inventiveness. This unusual and whimsical story enhanced by the charming child-like pen and ink, pencil and crayon artwork by Anne Pikkov is a delight to read.
