‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our

diminished, we are starved’

What Feelings Do When No One's Looking
by Tina Oziewicz
Age Range: 6-8
This very unique and original book by Polish author Tina Oziewicz has an evocative way of capturing different emotions and feelings ranging from curiosity, patience, joy, love and gratitude to imagination, nostalgia or anxiety, anger and hatred and is beautifully executed.
Two editions of the book have been published this year. One by Pushkin Children’s Books, translated by the author and a US edition published by Elsewhere Editions, translated by Jennifer Croft. There are slight differences in terms of the choice of words and nuances between the two but both are equally enchanting, although the Pushkin version is probably more suited to a UK audience and the illustrations are also a tad sharper too.
The flowing poetic text is a delight to read, and the few words are powerful. – “Compassion helps snails across the pavement” or “Shame burrows underground like a mole”. On the final spread, Oziewicz asks, “And where do they all live?” and the answer is “Inside Us”. This is accompanied by an image on the opposite page showing a mirror in whose reflection you can see a shadowy hand waving.
Aleksandra Zając’s stunning pen and ink fine-lined artwork with a palette of different shades of grey and the occasional hint of muted colour is a joy to look at.
