History Mystery (The)
by Ana Maria Machado
Age Range: 12+
When their teacher Mr Costa announces that Sonia, Pedro, Matt, Will and Faye have done the best history project in the class, especially the part about 'Akhenaten's monotheistic experience', the friends are astounded because they have no idea what he is talking about. This is just the start of some rather strange cyber activity that engulfs the friends in a real mystery – from odd messages that keep popping up on their mobile phones, on the websites they visit and even on the local radio station programme that they listen to. It seems to be a voice from the past – but who is trying to contact them and why?
The friends must follow the clues from their school in modern-day Brazil through the ages of ancient Egypt, to a medieval wizard's castle laboratory and to the ships that sailed from Europe to discover the New World.
Brazilian award-winning author of the Hans Christian Andersen Award Ana Maria Machado's novel is a light-hearted attempt to engage the reader in a history mystery. Readers can try to solve it as they go along by answering the questions set out at the back of the book on each chapter. There is also information and a quiz on Brazil at the beginning of the book too which is ideal to use in a classroom setting.
