Girl With Wings (The)
by Jaco Jacobs
Age Range: 9-11
Wilson Taylor is always on the move with her mother and stepfather Gabriel. They only ever stay for short periods in any one town. Sometimes she can’t help wondering what it would be like to have an ordinary family who lived in a proper house that didn’t have four wheels, not to have a famous tennis player mother or the ‘Most Hated Photographer’ stepdad and, especially, not to have been named after a tennis racket!
The family moved to the town of Leseeba just over three weeks ago where Wilson’s mother is running tennis camps for children. Errol Abrahams lives nearby and although Wilson finds him rather annoying at times, she starts to hang out with him. One day, they meet Ava, a girl who is different and has to stay out of sight. After befriending Ava the children realise that someone else has also discovered her secret and she’s now in imminent danger. When Ava goes missing, it’s up to Wilson and Errol to find her. Can they pull off a daring rescue mission before it’s too late?
South African author Jaco Jacobs weaves a charming and enchanting contemporary fable, translated from Afrikaans by Kobus Geldenhuys, with black and white illustrations by Tori Stowe, that is full of adventure and humour. Jacobs is an excellent storyteller and The Girl With Wings is a heart-warming tale with an array of quirky characters, however, beneath the surface, there is also an underlying subtext of being different, wanting to fit in and the power of friendship.
The Girl With Wings is the third novel of Jacob’s to be translated into English following on from A Good Day for Climbing Trees (2018) and A Good Night for Shooting Zombies (2018) both reviewed on the OIW website.
